The Lost Words: Spell Songs Calendar 2020
Spell Songs is a musical collaboration that grew out of the book The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris. Published in 2017 by Hamish Hamilton, the aim of the book was to reconnect people of all ages with the nearby wild, to help them see again the awesome wonder of the natural world, and to recognise their place in it.
The paintings in this calendar are wild portraits of each musician who contributed to the project and their instruments, which were produced first to accompany the sleeve notes for the Spell Songs CD. These are not the spirit animals of each musician, rather the musicians are the spirit human for each wild thing. Worked over a short period of time, in watercolour and gold leaf, while music grew around in the air, they celebrate the wild world an human creativity.
The ink paintings were worked in Sumi ink for the performance of Spell Songs at the Hay Festival 2019.
