A Drinker’s Guide to Cardiff

slider2Priced at just £2.99 A Drinker’s Guide to Cardiff is a new pocket book from Welsh publishers Graffeg. Suitable for anyone in search of a great night in Cardiff, out it is written (and researched) by Oliver Hurley and Phil Jones, the two people behind the popular blog Pintof45.

Featuring 20 of Cardiff’s leading pubs and bars, this book offers candid, not to mention tongue-in-cheek, reviews of some of the Welsh capital’s popular drinking spots. A lighthearted insight into the lifestyle and culture of Cardiff,  this book is testimony to the fact that pub culture as we know and love it is still alive and well and to be enjoyed in the capital. This isn’t your average tedious guide, it’s a guy having a few drinks with his mate while saying what they really think. Phil also takes the occasionally wonky, but always brilliant, photos.

This book is not a top twenty. This book is not a definitive guide. This book IS very funny. Find out for yourself by pre-ordering your copy here.

Summer Season of Seashore Safaris

Join marine biologist and author Judith Oakley (Oakley Intertidal) this summer on an exciting and educational ‘Seashore Safari’ adventure on the Gower coast. There are 12 events planned for 2014 at Mumbles, Oxwich, Port Eynon, Langland and Worms Head Causeway. A new event for this year is a nocturnal safari at Langland Bay, using torch light to spot rockpool life at night.

Over the past six summers, around 3,500 people have participated in the events with ages ranging from 3 to 83. These include tourists and local people who want to learn more about our amazing Welsh marine wildlife.

The first event is a Porpoise Picnic this Saturday 7th June at 1.30pm, meeting at the National Trust shop, Rhossili. The aim is to undertake a seabird and porpoise watch from the cliffs. The event will celebrate World Oceans Day and everyone will be encouraged to make a pledge to do something to help marine wildlife. Participants are asked to bring binoculars, something to sit on and a picnic.

Judith said ‘Following the enormous success of the Seashore Safaris events over the past six years, and with generous support from Gower AONB, Natural Resources Wales and the Heritage Lottery Fund, I have been able to organise a full programme of free events for 2014. The Seashore Safaris are not only good fun, but they also raise awareness of our rich and diverse seashore and marine life and stress the importance of conserving and protecting these important and sensitive habitats. Everyone learns about the ‘Seashore Code’ before we start on the expeditions so they respect the habitats we will be investigating and the wildlife we find. One thing to note is that we don’t use nets as these can damage more delicate creatures”.

She added “Last year, we discovered some amazing creatures including 8 species of crab, cushionstars, sea spiders, sea slugs, sea gherkins, lightbulb sea squirts and worm pipefish!”.

So if you want to find out how starfish eat, how crabs grow, how anemones catch their prey or how long limpets live, come on a ‘Seashore Safari’ adventure this summer!

To book and for more information, contact Judith Oakley on 07879 837817/ email info@oakleyintertidal.co.uk or follow Oakley Intertidal on Facebook.

All events are free but booking is essential. Please wear suitable clothing and footwear as you will get wet feet and will be walking over uneven rocks! Children (3yrs+) must be accompanied by an adult. Safaris last around 2.5-3 hours. Parking charges may apply.

Judith’s award-winning educational guidebook ‘Seashore Safaris’ will be on sale at all events.

Great night at Hay celebrating 21 inpirational women!

signings-2stage eventDespite a rainy day at the Hay Festival, Wednesday evening open its doors to a lively conversation with some remarkable women.
Crossing Borders author Julia Gregson and photographer Alex Pownall discussed life, ambition, work and success in the Welsh and English Border. Chaired by novelist Tiffany Murray, the panel included race horse trainer Venetia Williams; Richard Booth’s bookshop owner Elizabeth Haycox; and film maker, producer and Chair of the Hay Festival, Revel Guest.

A successful evening, the event attracted a great turnout of people all fascinated by the extraordinary lives these women have had. Witty and charming, the conversation boasted the talent and spirit to be had in the Border county. Why not read the book and learn more about the area, the women and how they got to where they are today.
