James Mayhew is an illustrator, author, concert presenter and storyteller. His first book, Katie’s Picture Show, was published in 1989, and twelve more ‘Katie’ titles have followed, introducing the great works of art to generations of children. James is also the creator of the much-loved Ella Bella Ballerina series and many other books, including The Knight Who Took All Day (new edition published by Graffeg in 2017), Koshka’s Tales, Miranda the Explorer and Boy. His prizes include a New York Times book illustration award (1994) and the Aesop Accolade from the American Folklore Society in 2002. As well as writing most of his own books, he has collaborated with a wide range of writers and artists, including Philippa Pearce, Elisabeth Beresford, Jackie Morris, and Clara Vulliamy. James also provided the charming illustrations for Gaspard the Fox (Graffeg, 2018), the first in a series of children’s stories from BBC Radio presenter Zeb Soanes based on his own experience of interacting with an urban fox.
